Habitat for Humanity turning empty classrooms at Eau Claire church into housing for homeless veterans


EAU CLAIRE (WKBT) -- Relief is on the way for homeless veterans.

Chippewa Valley Habitat for Humanity is planning on remodeling the old education wing of the Grace Lutheran Church into new apartments.

"We looked at various opportunities within the Eau Claire area and this one just laid the best for turning classrooms into apartments," Chippewa Valley Habitat for Humanity`s Executive Director John Dawson told News 8 Now. 

Housing Council Assistance reports that recently more than 300 homeless veterans are living in Wisconsin. Chippewa Valley Habitat for Humanity is hoping the apartments will get them off the streets and into a nice place. 

The eleven apartments will be studios, one bedroom and a two-bedroom unit. Housing will take up three floors of the church. Two of the floors will be units and one floor will be a common area. Vacant classrooms aren`t the only reason Habitat for Humanity choose the space. 

"We`re assuming a good percentage of the vets will be handicapped and the fact that they need services, having this location in the city close to services is an ideal place," Dawson explained...

Ken Notes: This is a great idea, Habitat has the skill set and the connections to get this done. Old schools, offices, older apartments, and other brick and mortar can create great living space. Access to health and mental health care and developing shared amenities and quality space is the perfect mix. Habitat will put the money into actual living space, rather than the bureaucracy and profit structure often associated with traditional "Affordable" housing...
