Iconic Mississippi River bridge connecting Wisconsin, Iowa reopens after three-week closure


An iconic Mississippi River bridge that connects southwest Wisconsin and northeast Iowa reopened June 9 after a three-week closure.

The 94-year-old Black Hawk Bridge, which links Lansing, Iowa with rural Crawford County is a lifeline for surrounding communities because it`s the only way to cross the river between La Crosse and Prairie du Chien, a nearly 60-mile stretch. During the closure, residents who normally could have made a quick trip to the other side of the river faced a two-hour round-trip commute.

  • The Black Hawk Bridge, which connects Lansing, Iowa to rural Crawford County in Wisconsin, reopened June 9. It closed May 17 after one of its support piers moved slightly.

  • The movement may have been due to the construction of a new bridge just north of the existing structure. The new bridge will replace the current one, which is 94 years old, in mid-2027.

  • The bridge is a lifeline for communities in the region. It`s the only way to cross the Mississippi in the 60-mile stretch between La Crosse and Prairie du Chien.

  • Another planned multi-week closure will occur this summer to allow for construction on the new bridge, but will happen after July 4 and will be announced at least a week in advance...
