Town of Liberty awarded the Conservation Excellence Award


LIBERTY, Wis. (WXOW) — The Town of Liberty has been honored for its innovative approach to conservation.

The Mississippi Valley Conservancy recognized the town for its efforts to combat light pollution in a press release Wednesday.

Liberty teamed up with the Kickapoo Valley Dark Sky Initiative to restore dark skies and ambient lighting. By reducing artificial lighting, the town has created a safer environment for animals in the area.

Scott Lind, President of the Kickapoo Valley Dark Sky Initiative, said, "Having any artificial light at night disrupts that ecosystem. Because, until electric light came around 125 or 140 years ago, there wasn`t any artificial light. They evolved in darkness, except for moonlight and starlight."
