For Veterans Day, held Nov. 11, it’s customary to thank veterans for protecting our freedom by upholding their oath to protect and defend the Constitution, even unto death. We know the actions of veterans have made a difference in everyday life because of the rights we enjoy. We thank veterans by fulfilling the responsibility that comes with each right. Many also thank veterans for their service in war and peacetime. But the contribution of some veterans changes everyday life in ways most don’t realize. One of those veterans was Robert McCoy. Driving across Monroe County on Wisconsin Highway 21, one sees farms nestled in rolling hills and within the valleys between. Patches of oak along with other hardwoods and pine mix with fields and pastures. But along the road the usual road signs are replaced by some that are not common in Wisconsin. Some indicate the area is a military reservation. Others depict tanks crossing the road. Soon gated roads appear on both sides of the highway, with signs indicating they are entrances to Fort McCoy – Wisconsin’s only U.S. Army post... | ||
