Tom Still: At Epic, AI isn’t just the next big thing: It’s already improving care


VERONA — Epic’s User Group Meeting annually offers a themed surprise for thousands of visitors, so it was no shock when founder Judy Faulkner appeared on stage Tuesday in the company’s Deep Space Auditorium dressed as “Lady Swan,” a variation on Mother Goose and in keeping with a larger storytelling motif.

What may have surprised the Deep Space crowd and thousands more watching around the world is that while artificial intelligence has already transformed many Epic Systems Corp. services, there is much more to unfold in the fairy tale “story” of Epic’s pioneering of health care software.

Some numbers put Epic’s UGM in context: People from health care systems, payor networks and more from all 50 U.S. states and 15 other countries were on hand in the 11,400-seat Deep Space venue when Faulkner and team updated how the company’s software is being used....

Microsoft announces $3.3 billion investment in Wisconsin to spur artificial intelligence innovation and economic growth


Mount Pleasant, WI – May 8, 2024 – Microsoft today announced a broad investment package designed to strengthen the role of Southeast Wisconsin as a hub for AI-powered economic activity, innovation, and job creation. These investments include $3.3B in cloud computing and AI infrastructure, the creation of the country’s first manufacturing-focused AI co-innovation lab, and an AI skilling initiative to equip more than 100,000 of the state’s residents with essential AI skills. President Joe Biden will join Microsoft President Brad Smith at Gateway Technical College to announce the new investment.

“Wisconsin has a rich and storied legacy of innovation and ingenuity in manufacturing,” said Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft. “We will use the power of AI to help advance the next generation of manufacturing companies, skills and jobs in Wisconsin and across the country. This is what a big company can do to build a strong foundation for every medium, small and start-up company and non-profit everywhere.”

These investments will be rolled out in a four-part strategy designed to create long-term benefits for the state’s economy and job market.

Wisconsin political ads must now disclose if they include AI-generated content


Candidates and political groups will have to disclose when they use artificial intelligence to generate audio or video in ads aired in Wisconsin, according to a new law signed Thursday.

The bipartisan legislation comes in a national election year that some political experts say will be defined by AI-generated content and influence campaigns.

“This technology is not good or bad. Somebody can use AI to generate graphics to generate a jingle for a radio ad, to maybe make an animation that illustrates their views on the issues,” said Sen. Mark Spreitzer...

Governor’s Task Force on Workforce and Artificial Intelligence


Overview

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies are profoundly shaping the nature of work, altering the skills workers need for success, changing the competitive landscape for employers, and forcing educational and workforce development systems to overhaul their offerings in order to sustain a thriving Wisconsin economy. Already, Wisconsin employers and educational institutions are implementing AI applications in fields ranging from manufacturing and health care to transportation, agriculture, and the sciences.

At the same time, the rise of generative AI offers the potential to advance equity and economic opportunity for the people of Wisconsin. To help harness these technologies and strengthen Wisconsin`s workforce for the 21st century and beyond, Gov. Tony Evers signed Executive Order #211, creating the Governor’s Task Force on Workforce and Artificial Intelligence.

The task force is expected to serve as a crucial mechanism to adapt and equip a workforce capable of capitalizing on this transformation. The task force is chaired by the secretary of the Department of Workforce Development or a designee with additional leadership from the secretary of the Department of Administration or a designee and the secretary of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. or a designee...

Governor’s Task Force on Workforce and Artificial Intelligence Releases Comprehensive Advisory Action Plan


In response to the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and its transformative impact on labor markets, the Wisconsin Governor Ton Evers’ Task Force on Workforce and Artificial Intelligence has released a detailed Advisory Action Plan. Established by Executive Order #211, the Task Force is chaired by Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Amy Pechacek, with additional leadership from Department of Administration (DOA) Secretary Kathy Blumenfeld and Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) Secretary and CEO Missy Hughes. The plan aims to harness AI technologies to advance equity and economic opportunities while addressing potential workforce disruptions.

AI technologies are reshaping work, requiring new skills and altering competitive landscapes. According to the plan, Wisconsin ranks first among all states in terms of employment-weighted share of businesses using AI, and is uniquely positioned to lead this transformation. The Task Force was created to help Wisconsin capitalize on these opportunities and mitigate the risks associated with AI advancements.
